How do you install a Claude skill and create your own?
You install a skill in Claude under Customize, then Skills, then Add, then Upload. You can create one three ways: upload a file someone shared, record your screen on a Mac, or just describe what you want and tell Claude to save it as a skill.
Somebody sent you a Claude skill. It downloaded as a file with an extension you have never seen, and now it is sitting in your Downloads folder doing nothing. That is where most agents stop.
Installing it takes about thirty seconds once you know where the button is. Building your own takes about as long, and you do not need to write a line of code to do it.

What a Claude skill actually is
A skill is a set of saved instructions that Claude follows every time you ask for a certain kind of work. Think of it as a recipe you write once and never have to explain again.
Without a skill, every time you want a listing description you retype the whole prompt: your voice, your formatting, your compliance rules, the things you never say. With a skill, you say write the listing description for 283 South 25th Avenue and Claude already knows all of it.
That is the entire value. It is not smarter output. It is the same good output without you rebuilding the prompt every single time.
Two things a skill can be:
Something you build for yourself, from the way you already work
Something someone else built and shared with you as a file
Before you install anything, check where it came from
This is the part I want you to hear before the how-to. A skill is a file, and files can carry things you do not want. Only install a skill from a source you actually trust.
A quick filter that works:
You know the person who sent it, by name, and they can explain what it does
It came from an official library or a company you already do business with
You can open it and read the instructions inside before you install it
If a skill arrives from a stranger in a Facebook group with no explanation, skip it. You are not missing much. Most skills are short enough that you could rebuild the useful part yourself in ten minutes.
How to install a Claude skill, step by step
This assumes someone already gave you a skill file, or you downloaded one that was shared with you.
Open Claude. Look at the top left for the Customize button.
Click Customize, then find the Skills section on the lower left.
Click the Add dropdown and choose Upload a skill.
Drag and drop the file into the window, or click the upload button and pick it from your computer.
Save it. That is it, the skill is now available in your account.
One thing that trips people up: skill files are their own file type, so they can look strange sitting in your Downloads folder. That is normal. You do not need to unzip anything or rename anything, just drag the file over as it is.
If a skill was shared with you inside a chat, you can click the skill itself and download the file first, then upload it the same way.
How to update a skill you already installed
Skills get better the more you use them. You will notice a rule you forgot, or a section you always end up rewriting by hand.
When that happens, edit the skill and upload it again. Claude recognizes that the skill already exists, and the button changes from Upload to Upload and replace. Your improved version overwrites the old one and nothing gets duplicated.
Treat that as the normal workflow, not a repair. My best skills are on their fifth or sixth version.
Three ways to create your own Claude skill
You do not need anyone to hand you a skill. Here are the three ways to make one, easiest last.
1. Build the file and upload it
If you already have the instructions written somewhere, a checklist, a process doc, the notes you keep for how you write your listing remarks, you can turn that into a skill file and upload it using the steps above.
This is the right approach when you want tight control over the wording, or when you plan to share the skill with your team and want everyone running the same version.
2. Record your screen and let Claude watch
This one is my favorite and a lot of people do not know it exists. On a Mac, click the plus button and choose Record a skill.
Claude records your screen, your voice, and everywhere you click. So you just do the task the way you normally do it, narrating as you go, and Claude turns what it watched into a repeatable skill.
Worth knowing:
Last time I checked, screen recording is Mac only
Talk while you work, the narration is what teaches Claude the why behind each click
Do the task at normal speed, you do not need a perfect take
This is the fastest way to capture a process that lives in your head and has never been written down. Most agents have five or six of those.
3. Just talk to Claude and tell it to save the skill
The simplest version of all. Open a chat and explain what you want, the same way you would explain it to a new assistant. Go back and forth until the output looks right.
Then say: save this as a skill.
Claude writes it up and saves it. No file, no upload, no code. This is where I tell agents to start, because you end up with a skill built from a conversation you were already having.
Skills worth building if you sell real estate in Denver Metro
A skill only pays off on work you repeat. Here is where I see the most time come back for agents across Denver and the Front Range:
Listing descriptions in your voice, with your Fair Housing rules baked in so you are not proofreading for banned phrases every time
Your monthly market update email, built to take raw numbers and produce the same clean format each month
Open house follow up, with your timing and your questions rather than a generic template
Buyer and seller net sheet explanations written in plain language a client can actually read
Social captions that keep your hashtag set, your call to action, and your tone consistent across every post
Notice what all five have in common. They are things you already do every month. The skill does not invent new work, it removes the setup cost from work you were doing anyway.
What skills will not do for you
Skills are a shortcut, not autopilot. AI gets you 85 to 95 percent of the way there, and you are still the expert who makes the final call.
That last 5 to 15 percent is where your license, your market knowledge, and your relationship with the client live. Nothing you install changes that.
Practical version:
Read every word before it goes out with your name on it
You are responsible for Fair Housing, MLS accuracy, and your brokerage rules, not the tool
Never let a skill send anything on your behalf without you seeing it first

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to code to build a Claude skill?
No. The three methods in this post are uploading a file, recording your screen, and describing what you want in a normal conversation. None of them require code. The talking method is the one most agents start with.
Where is the skills section in Claude?
Click Customize in the top left, then look for Skills on the lower left. The Add dropdown in that section is where Upload a skill lives.
Can I record a skill on a Windows computer?
Last time I checked, the record a skill feature was Mac only. If you are on Windows you can still build skills the other two ways, and the conversation method works exactly the same.
How do I update a skill after I improve it?
Upload the new version the same way you uploaded the first one. Claude will show Upload and replace instead of Upload, and your new version takes the place of the old one.
Is it safe to install a skill someone sends me?
Only if you trust the source. A skill is a file, and you should treat it the way you would treat any file from someone you do not know. If you cannot say who built it and what it does, do not install it.
