What do I need to start using Claude Cowork? You need an updated computer, the Claude desktop app, the Claude Chrome extension, and a paid Claude Pro plan. Once those four pieces are in place, you're ready to start using Claude Cowork for your business.
If you're planning to join one of my upcoming AI classes, or you've just heard me talk about Claude Cowork and want to try it yourself, this is your setup guide. I recorded a quick walkthrough showing exactly what to download, what to install, and what to sign up for, so you can be ready to go before class starts.
Watch the full walkthrough below, then use the steps underneath it as your checklist.
Quick Links to Get Started

Claude Chrome Extension: https://bit.ly/claude-extension
Step 1: Update Your Computer First
Before you download anything, check for pending updates on your laptop or desktop.
Install any pending operating system updates.
Install any pending software updates you've been putting off.
Confirm your computer isn't more than about five years old.
A lot of installation problems people run into with Claude come down to an outdated operating system. If your computer is very old or very slow, Claude may not install properly, so it's worth handling this first instead of troubleshooting it later.
Step 2: Download Claude to Your Computer
Once your computer is updated, go to claude.com/download and download the version for your device, Mac or PC. The site will detect your operating system and give you the right option.
After the file downloads:
Click install.
Approve the permissions Claude asks for. Claude needs access to certain things on your computer so it can help you with agentic tasks later.
Look for the orange icon with a snowflake in the middle. That's the Claude app, and it should now be sitting on your computer ready to use.
Step 3: Create or Confirm Your Claude Account
Next, you need an active Claude account. You can set this up two ways:
Open the Claude desktop app and create your account directly there.
Or go to Claude.ai in your browser and create an account that way.
Here's the part people miss: whichever account you use in your browser needs to match the account you use inside the desktop app. If the two accounts don't line up, Claude won't be able to talk to itself across your browser and your desktop, and features like Claude Cowork won't work the way they're supposed to.
Step 4: Install the Claude Chrome Extension
Claude Cowork relies on a Chrome extension, so this step matters.
If you don't already use Google Chrome, download it first at google.com. Chrome is a browser, just like Safari, Firefox, or Internet Explorer, and it's required for the extension to work.
Once Chrome is installed:
Go to the Chrome Web Store and search for the Claude Chrome extension.
Click Add to Chrome and follow the prompts to install it.
Click the puzzle-piece Extensions icon in your Chrome toolbar to find Claude, then click it to open the sidebar.
Pin the extension so it stays visible in your toolbar. You'll be using it often, so this saves you a step every time.
The first time you open the sidebar, Claude will show you a few disclaimers about using AI at your own risk. Click through and agree, then make sure you're signed in with the same Claude account you used in Step 3.
Step 5: Sign Up for a Claude Pro Plan
This is the step people sometimes skip, and it's the one that actually unlocks everything.
To use the Claude Chrome extension and Claude Cowork, you need a paid Claude plan. The Pro plan is where most people start. Pricing can shift over time, so check the current rate directly on Claude.ai when you sign up, but plan on it being in the neighborhood of $20 a month if you're paying monthly.
Without an active paid plan, you won't be able to access or use these tools, even if everything else is installed correctly.
Your Setup Checklist
Once you've worked through all five steps, here's what you should have in place:
Computer updated and current
Claude downloaded and installed
Claude account created, matching across browser and desktop
Claude Chrome extension installed and pinned
Claude Pro plan active
If you can check off all five, you're ready to start using Claude Cowork for your business.
Why This Matters for Denver Metro Agents
I work with real estate agents across Denver Metro and Colorado every day as a Sales Executive with Chicago Title of Colorado, and the agents who get the most out of AI tools like Claude are the ones who take the setup seriously before they try to use it for real work. Skipping a step, like mismatched accounts or an expired browser version, is the number one reason people get frustrated and give up before they ever see what Claude Cowork can actually do.
Chicago Title of Colorado has been a trusted title partner for agents throughout Colorado for decades, and part of my role is making sure you have the tools and training to grow your business, whether that's AI, marketing, or the fundamentals of a smooth closing. If you're coming to one of my upcoming AI classes, having this setup done ahead of time means we can spend our time together actually building things instead of troubleshooting installs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Claude Cowork used for?
Claude Cowork lets you delegate research, writing, file organization, and other repetitive business tasks to AI directly from your browser and desktop. Real estate agents use it for things like drafting listing content, organizing client follow-ups, and speeding up day-to-day marketing work.
Do I need Google Chrome to use Claude Cowork?
Yes. Claude Cowork depends on the Claude Chrome extension, so you'll need Google Chrome installed on your computer even if you normally use a different browser.
Why isn't Claude installing on my computer?
The most common cause is an outdated operating system or a computer that's several years old. Update your operating system and software fully before attempting to install Claude, and confirm your device isn't too old to support it.
Is Claude Cowork free to use?
No. You need an active paid Claude plan, typically the Pro plan, to access Claude Cowork and the Chrome extension. Check current pricing directly on Claude.ai, since it can change.
What happens if my Claude accounts don't match across devices?
If you create an account in your browser that's different from the one in your desktop app, the two won't sync properly, and features like Claude Cowork won't function correctly. Always double-check you're logged into the same account in both places.
